Braves Take Advantage Of Cardinals Errors Late In Game To Win 5-1!

Julio TeheranOn a very hot and humid Friday Night in St. Louis The Atlanta Braves scored late once again to beat the Cardinals 5-1!

This game was a pitchers duel between the Braves Julio Teheran and the Cardinals Mike Mikolas for the first six innings.

Julio Teheran pitched six scoreless innings giving up only 2 hits.  He only had 2 walks which came to the first two batters of the game.  Teheran had 4 strikeouts on only 88 pitches.

The Atlanta Braves began their scoring in the top of the seventh inning.  Johan Camargo singled on a line drive off of third baseman Matt Carpenter that was deflected of pitcher Mike Mikolas.  Dansby Swanson then singles to left fielder Marcell Ozuna.  Danny Santana pinch hits for Julio Teheran and singled to center fielder Tommy Pham.  Ender Inciarte gets hit by the pitcher Austin Gomber.  Johan Camargo scores to give the Braves a 1-0 lead going to the bottom of the seventh inning.

In the eighth inning the Braves blow it open and score 3 runs.  Nick Markakis works a walk off new pitcher Jordan Hicks.  Kurt Suzuki once again gets hit by the pitcher.  Johan Camargo then doubled to left fielder Marcell Ozuna.  Nick Markakis and Kurt Suzuki scored.  Dansby Swanson singled to the right fielder Harrison Bader.  Johan Camargo scored and Dansby Swanson goes to third on a throwing error by Harrison Bader to give the Braves a 4-0 lead going to the bottom of the eighth inning.

Braves manager Brian Snitker took a chance and lifted Julio Teheran for a pinch hitter in the seventh inning.  Teheran was pitching great through six innings.  But this move by Snitker pays off as the Braves scored 3 runs in the eight inning.

The Braves added on another run in the top of the ninth inning.

Ozzie Albies singled on a soft ground ball to the pitcher and advanced to second base on an error by pitcher Brett Cecil.  Freddie Freeman then grounds out to second basemen Kolten Wong.  Ozzie Albies advanced to third base.  Nick Markakis hits a sacrifice fly to center fielder Tommy Pham.  Ozzie Albies scored to up the Braves lead to 5-0 going to the bottom of the ninth inning.

The St. Louis Cardinals only had two inning where they had an opportunity to score any runs.

In the first inning they had runners on 1st and 2nd with nobody out but failed to score.

Then in the bottom of the ninth inning Braves pitcher Luke Jackson gives up 2 walks, 1 hit and 1 run.  Braves pitcher Dan Winkler comes in to relieve Jackson and gets the last two outs to ear his first save of the season.

With this win the record for the Atlanta Braves is 46-34.  The St. Louis Cardinals drop to 42-38!

Braves Take Advantage Of Cardinals Errors Late In Game To Win 5-1

I really enjoyed watching this game pitched by Julio Teheran.  After the first inning he was on fire.  He had great control on all his pitches.  Teheran had a great fastball that was clocked as high as 92 which is where it needs to be in order for his off-speed pitches to be effective.

As far as managerial decisions, I thought manger Brian Snitker had a pretty good game.  It is so easy for Braves fans to second guess our manager when it does not go the Braves way.  I believe there were two tough calls he had to make.

The first one was whether to pinch hit for Teheran in the top of the 7th inning.  Their was no score and we had two runners on base and one out.  The Braves ended up scoring one run to take a 1-0 lead.

The other decision was whether to bring in Luke Jackson to pitch the 9th inning after the braves had a 5 run lead.  I understand bringing Jackson in so you don’t overuse Dan Winkler.  Snitker ended up having to bring in Winkler to close out the game because Jackson ran into a little trouble when he loaded the basses.  But all in all I believe it was a well managed game by Snitker!
